Why Hair Is Important to Women.
Our hair tends to assume our identity this is so because it’s public and at the same time personal. Any women would agree to the saying a bad hair equals a bad day: if a lady’s hair is too frizzy, turning grey, too fine, falling out or too dry this affects her esteem severely. This intimate correlation of hair and self-esteem is evident throughout religion, philosophy as well as history here is a few examples of the role hair has played:
- According to 1 Corinthians, 11:5 “And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonours her head, for it is just as if her head were shaved.” No wonder women feel like their hair are crowns of glory this clearly shows the negative implications of the bare head in the modern society biblically. This gives them an identity.
- During the civil war, it was a law that women were not meant to participate in battles, this lead to battle passionate women to disguise themselves as men through shaving. In 1940 France battle women’s heads were shaved as a form of punishment for their sexual relations with German soldiers from this examples it is evident that women hair is regard as a symbol of femininity.
- A short bob cut just below the ear was favoured by Chinese soldiers in the 1950s this hairstyle was named as “liberation hairdo “simply because it was a symbol of women taking charge of their lives hence making women’s hair a symbol of liberation.
An average woman spends roughly $50000 on her hair only in her lifetime and almost 2-3hours a week styling and washing her hair. It’s not just because it represents appearance but because it represents personality, beliefs as well as thoughts. It’s evident that hair contributes greatly to women’s motives, actions and self-esteem.
